Rob Key, England’s men’s cricket manager, hopes to hire different coaches for the Test and white-ball teams. McCullum is one of those reported to have been initially contacted and reviewed in recent days.
It was widely assumed that McCullum’s application, 40, would be compatible with the restricted overs opportunity. Given a beginning training profession dedicated entirely to the development of T20 cricket. And a close friendship with England’s white-ball leader, Eoin Morgan.
However, there is now a rising presumption that McCullum will be in charge of the Test setup. In a move that would solidify his tough stance with Ben Stokes’ captaincy. The first test is against New Zealand on June 2nd at Lord’s.
Again, assuming this is correct, Gary Kirsten would be passing up a significant chance with the position. When Chris Silverwood was hired in 2019, he was the next line.
