South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has been awarded the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2022 in recognition of his great recent form.
During the Proteas’ recent two-match Test series against Bangladesh, Maharaj was at his spectacular best, beating out fellow South African Simon Harmer and Oman opener Jatinder Singh for the monthly award.
It was a well-deserved honor for Maharaj, who took 16 wickets for South Africa throughout the Test series and was named Player of the Series.
His achievements were not limited to the ball; during the second Test in Port Elizabeth, Maharaj scored an explosive 84 with the bat as South Africa won the series 2-0 at home.
Members of the voting panel who selected Maharaj for the monthly distinction admired the 32-year-old.
“A truly incredible few weeks exhibiting tremendous guts and drive,” stated JP Duminy, a former South African batter and current voting panel member.
“It’s incredible to see him work in unison with Simon Harmer to harness the abilities we’ve always known were there,” Duminy continued.
Maharaj concluded the two-match Test series against Bangladesh with the most wickets. He took 16 wickets at an average of 12.12 and led South Africa to a 2-0 series victory, in second place in the World Test Championship points table.
